Dan, a store manager for a regional auto and sporting goods retailer, told session 7B of the Leadership Development Lab:

"When I received my red dot at session 3 of the Leadership Development Lab as a reminder to apply five times more enthusiasm to some project of importance that I had been putting off, I wasn't sure what I wanted to work on. My problem wasn't thinking of one thing, it was deciding on which one of the many projects on my long list I had to choose from. I had a lot of things hanging over my head that needed to be done. About 10 days later, it hit me. I remembered my father-in-law bugging me every time he would come over to dinner about the need to trim an overgrown hedge on the south side of my house. I thought, 'What a great idea!' so on my next day off, I got my hedge clippers out of the grudge, looked at the hedge – it was daunting. It should have been 6 feet high at most. Instead it was actually about 12 to 13 feet high. I started with determined expectations and began trimming. After about 40 minutes, I looked at what I had accomplished, how much I had completed – not much. At the rate I was going, I thought that it was going to take me forever. I went into my garage and pulled out the chainsaw. In about an hour, I kept a hedge all down until what I had left was for stumps. I looked back at the remaining hedge and thought that it had been pretty easy until I saw all the branches on the ground. I began cutting the branches into smaller pieces and putting them in my recycle bucket. As I was doing this, a neighbor came over with his recycle bucket and began to help me. I was very happy because with five times more enthusiasm and my neighbors help, I was able to get a

job handled that needed to be done for over two years.

"The lesson I learned from this experience is that no matter what the project or situation, when I engage with five times more enthusiasm, I can accomplish big changes and my energy actually attracts others to join in. 5X enthusiasm makes the job easier and more fun. The action I call you to take is apply five times more enthusiasm to your personal life and in the workplace. You will be amazed at the outcomes. The benefit you will gain is you will get things done quicker, people around you will see your enthusiasm and will want to join in your excitement."

Whether you know it or not, like it or not, others are always watching you and emulating your behavior. A company "culture" is the collection of behavioral habits, attitudes and feelings that make up the opinions, beliefs and values of the organization. We walk into companies every day and can feel it – laidback, lackadaisical, no goals or excited, energetic engagement - and believe it or not, one person really engaged can turn things around, can inject enthusiasm, passion, excitement and energy into the entire culture. If not you, who? If not now, when? Accept the challenge, attack the overgrown hedges, the barriers in your life with determination and passion. You will be amazed at the results.
